Ingredients

For the Chicken
  • 4 thighs chicken thighs (bone-in or boneless) Juicy and perfect for absorbing the marinade.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Tenderizes the chicken and adds flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce Adds a kick to the marinade.
For the Coating
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For that crispy coating.
  • 2 teaspoons paprika Adds smokiness and color.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a savory depth.
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Adjust for heat preference!
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for seasoning.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. Submerge chicken thighs, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for more flavor).
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
Cooking
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  2. Remove chicken from the marinade and shake off excess. Dredge each thigh in the flour mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  3. Place the chicken in the air fryer basket. Cook for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken is golden brown and crispy.
  4. While the chicken is cooking, combine some of the leftover spices with additional hot oil (like vegetable or canola oil) for brushing on later.
  5. Brush the hot oil mixture on cooked chicken thighs for that signature Nashville flavor.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free flour. Reduce or omit cayenne for less heat; consider adding smoked paprika for a different flavor profile. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
