- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan or bundt pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in applesauce.
- Fold in dry ingredients just until combined. Add raisins and nuts if using.
- Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 45-50 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- For glaze: Combine brown sugar, butter, and milk in a saucepan. Boil for 2 minutes, remove from heat, and stir in vanilla.
- Cool cake 15 minutes. If using, pour warm glaze over cake while slightly warm.
